I believe sunfish are considered a gamefish, however they don't have limits on the number you can take. http://www.ohiodnr.com/wildlife/dow/reg ... imits.aspx
I think Jones fish hatchery carries a number of different species of sunfish for sale, I know they carry bluegill at least so you may want to check that out.

"FORAGE FISH means freshwater drum (in the Lake Erie fishing district only), carp, quillback, suckers, bowfin, gar, buffalo, gizzard shad, and goldfish. These species may be taken by any method except by means of explosives, poisons, firearms, electricity, chemicals, nets, seines, or traps, or by snagging within 1,000 feet downstream of a dam. Gizzard shad and smelt may be taken with a minnow seine, minnow dip net, or hand landing net."

I have been doing some more creeking recently, I haven't been able to catch a female for my banded darter, if anyone catches an extra one they dont need, feel free to send me a pm. :D I caught some other species of darters recently but i released most of them due to lack of space, i probably could catch them again. They were not very pretty though, some type of speckled species, I could catch someone some of those if they wanted to do a trade probably.

Anyway, my advice is to not where flip flops when you are creeking... my foot is still healing. :)

"It is unlawful to buy or sell any fish taken by angling from any water area in the state where an Ohio Fishing License is required." -they dont say anything about the fry though.. :)

Good luck creeking all.

Here are some helpful links...

Ohio regulations for "creekin".... officially recognized as "fish-bait collecting"....

http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Default.aspx?tabid=18644

A link to an Ohio pamphlet with great colored pictures of sport fish, bait fish, minnows... including darters and such....

http://www.flipseekllc.com/wildohio2009sportfish.html

notice on page 44 the bluegill is listed as a "popular live bait" but be careful... it is a "sport fish" as noted on this page....

http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Home/species_a_to_z/SpeciesGuideIndex/bluegill/tabid/6561/Default.aspx

As Klaus pointed out, it can be used as live bait if taken legally by pole and hook.... but not caught by seine. At least that is my understanding. And, as you look at all the pictures you can finally clear up any confusion you've had about referring to all sunfish... pumpkinseeds and redears included... as bluegill.

Also, from the last link you can find articles on each fish under the respective letter at the top.

Have FUN !

Has anyone kept sunfish in a planted tank? I'm interested in getting some sunfish, but only if they will be good to my plants and not eat them or uproot them.

All Lepomid sunfish build nests in gravel and they can be very large. The best one to get is the orangespotted sunfish, Lepomis humilis, which also builds a small nest. Mark Binkley successfully kept and bred this one in a planted tank. Otherwise i would restrict my plants to ones you can fix to rocks and driftwood, like Bolbitis, Anubias, Java Moss, Java Fern and Riccia.

Computer is in shop :x and hate using laptop  Anyways if we are doing this I have a seine net (brand new). Couldn't read the links right now, but wonder if there is difference between using fish for bait vs. research/hobby. I know Fred Hamilton aka Mr. 1000 gallon raised a species of sunfish and John Sipes has some nice ones. I have no time to organize anything atm, but if a group is going to go...count me and at least one son in.

I don't see a date, time, or place to meet for this outing. I am open to any time this Sunday. 2 seines, chase net, cooler, bucket, native fish field guide book, will travel.

I nominate Chris aka Cincycichlids to organize the event (that is if he is going). I have to go to bed and very busy tomorrow.

Haha... well Lets meet at 11:30am on Sunday at the Burger King in Loveland OH.. which is right off of the Loveland-Indian Hill exit (Turn AWAY from Lake Isabella - Towards Loveland). The creek is about 5 min away from there. That way we can consolidate vehicles or whatnot. I won't be around for long that day, but you kids can play in the creek as long as you'd like. To my knowledge it is 100% ok to be going where we are... just no off-roading around there.

Any idea on what the smallest tank size a person could breed bluegill in? I was at sharron woods yesterday fishing, and i caught 5 in like 1 or 2 hours. I realeased them though because I don't have the tank space atm, but has anyone tried a 30 gallon?
